Placenta Praevia

Placenta praevia occurs when the placenta lies low in the uterus and partially or completely covers the cervix.

This condition requires specialist monitoring because it can affect the mode and timing of delivery. With the right care, most women with placenta praevia go on to have safe pregnancies and healthy babies.

As a Consultant Obstetrician and Fetal Medicine Specialist, DrDr Devi Subramanian has significant expertise in diagnosing and managing placenta praevia. Early detection allows careful planning and ensures that both mother and baby receive the safest possible care.

Placenta praevia is usually identified during a routine mid-pregnancy scan at around 20 weeks. In many cases, the placenta moves upward as the uterus grows, resolving by the third trimester. However, if the placenta remains low-lying after 32 weeks, additional monitoring and planning are required.

Women are more likely to develop placenta praevia if they have

  • Previous caesarean sections
  • Multiple pregnancies
  • IVF pregnancies
  • Uterine fibroids
  • A history of placenta praevia
  • A large or multiple placental lobes

Placenta praevia can increase the risk of bleeding in pregnancy, especially in the third trimester. For this reason, early diagnosis and careful follow-up scans are essential.

Your care may include

  • Regular ultrasound assessments
  • Growth monitoring
  • Doppler blood flow studies
  • Specialist advice regarding activity and symptoms
  • Guidance on recognising bleeding or warning signs

If placenta praevia persists into late pregnancy, a planned caesarean section is usually recommended. The timing of delivery will depend on individual factors such as bleeding episodes, placental location, and fetal wellbeing.

In more complex cases, such as when placenta praevia is associated with placenta accreta (where the placenta attaches too deeply), multidisciplinary care is arranged to ensure a controlled and safe delivery. Dr Subramanian works closely with anaesthetists, fetal medicine specialists, and theatre teams to optimise outcomes.

Navigating placenta praevia can be emotionally challenging. Clear communication, reassurance, and expert management help mothers feel supported and confident throughout their pregnancy journey.
